The newest I-9 form has been released! Employers have been patiently waiting for the new form since its expiration date in March, and it is now available. Employers can continue using the current version of the Form I-9 (revision date of March 8, 2013) until January 21, 2017. After this date, all previous versions of the I-9 will be invalid. The new Form I-9 expires on August 31, 2019.
Some of the new changes include smart error-checking features such as verifying the correct number of digits for a SSN, drop-down lists and calendars, and requiring only last names in section one instead of all other names that have been used. However, employers that are filling this electronically must still obtain hand-written signatures and store in the Form I-9 in a safe place that is separate from other HR files.
